We stashed our skates in the office where I had picked up the fliers. Joe and Rick were obviously nervous and so was I but when the music started and they had their first taste of the pit, soon they too found a home. The first band that played was called The Faction. The guitar player was a pro skater named Steve Caballero. We had all heard or heard of this band, and of course we all knew of Cab, he was a legend on a skateboard. I was a little surprised that the turnout for this show was a lot smaller than last time.

It broke on the railroad tracks and Jerry started yelling at me for being a stupid, clumsy, good-for-nothing drunk. Toby and Jamie were laughing so hard that they almost fell down too. I started to realize how drunk I was but I didn’t care. I felt invincible. If Jerry hadn’t been ten years older than I was I would have kicked him in the teeth for making me look stupid in front of Mona. But she didn’t seem to mind either; she had my leather on and was ready to go get some hot dogs. We walked the tracks toward the beach.

Getting to the boardwalk was the tricky part. We decided to stay on the levee most of the way even though the cops patrolled up there a lot. At least that way we could probably see them before they saw us and we could hide or run if we had to. The levee was right behind the club so we walked around back where the bands were packing up their stuff and a bunch of older people were hanging out drinking. Toby knew a couple of them; 20 dharma punx they were friends of his cousin’s. One of them gave us a couple of beers for the walk home.
