That is not to say that curious items disappeared from view altogether. 24 New values, new orders The process of re-evaluation and re-ordering was substantial and involved two main directives: the institution of many new discrete branches of knowledge or ‘disciplines’ formed by the division of pre-existing domains and the presentation of these new branches of knowledge to enlighten the public. From the eighteenth century onwards the separation of practice and knowledge, and the further division of knowledge and practice into branches of autonomous disciplines progressively came to dominate Western epistemology.
